A Presidential Message from the Readers of the Bookit Club

Dear K12 International Academy Students,

Having been recently elected as President of the Bookit Club in the K12 International Academy, it brings me great joy to have the opportunity to write this article. The Bookit Club is currently open for all full-time high school students in the K12 International Academy. As president, I plan on suggesting that the club be expanded to allow full time middle school students to participate as well.

Thus, on behalf of Mrs. Stahlhut, Mrs. Moore, and myself, we invite our friends at K12 to join us in our meeting for May 22nd at 10 AM EST in which we will be discussing the science fiction novel Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. If you do plan on participating, please read the book beforehand and we ask you to consider becoming a full time member of our team of readers. We commune once a month so we ask you to join us as often as possible to be considered an active member of our club.

“A book is a dream that you hold in your hand,” said Neil Gaiman. Like a dream, books may teleport you to strange places, allow you to meet unusual people, and, perhaps above all, acquaint you with the most bizarre of ideas. However, books are often nothing like dreams; instead they take you to places very much like your own, contemporary and modern places with people just like you. I promise that we will, as readers, explore all of the possible terrains that literature has to offer. We will travel through land and time to discover, then view, and then analyze the literary creatures that await examination at every corner.

The book is honest; hence, it never lies. It could be beautiful, revealing to us lands of prosperity and people of joy; but it could also be brutal, explicitly drawing out dilapidated societies and unsettling people who remind us of the darker qualities we possess within ourselves. As Neil Gaiman states, “Fiction is a lie that tells us true things, over and over.”

Once more, I will remind you that our next meeting will be on May 22nd at 10 AM EST. Please read Uglies by Scott Westerfeld beforehand and prepare to discuss it critically. With this said, join us at the K12 International Academy Bookit Club and revel in the unblinking candor of the book.

Sincerely,

Omar Ateyah, President of the Bookit Club
